Olympic Weightlifting is primarily an individual sport. When an athlete steps on the platform, they do so on their own. There is no opponent nor are there any teammates with them, just the athlete and the bar. This kind of set up & environment requires one to look within themselves and motivate them to lift. Although training alone has some benefits, i.e. self-reliance and better focus, team training will always be better than training alone. Some of the benefits of training with a team are as under:
Faster progress
One trains better and pushes themselves more when there are other weightlifters watching and cheering them on. Humans are social animals and as such, they thrive in social settings. This heavily applies to team training, especially in terms of overall motivation and energy levels where participants can encourage and push each other. Olympic Weightlifting can be very demanding, and one often finds completely depleted. Having a team support system can greatly help an individual to keep pushing harder and achieve faster progress.
Builds consistency
Team training promotes discipline and consistency. There are better chances of an athlete showing up to train when they know that the team will be there training as opposed to an individual training session where one must motivate oneself, which requires a lot more mental energy to be mustered. When peers consistently train together, they hold themselves accountable thus everyone becomes more disciplined and can consistently show up for training sessions.
Builds community
Team training promotes a sense of community. As mentioned above, humans are social animals and thrive in social environments. One of the most beneficial aspects of team training is companionship. Training does get demanding and tiring, especially closer to competition. Simply realizing that training partners and teammates are experiencing the same thing can provide oneself with enough uplift to carry on and push harder. An athlete will not feel so alone with their struggles when they train with right minded people around. Mutual trust and friendship among individuals who train together greatly promotes a sense of belonging and strengthens the social bonds within the team.
Supportive environment
– Team training creates a great learning environment where athletes can learn from each other. Everyone has their own attributes and strengths. Training with athletes of different attributes and skill sets helps advance an individual’s training as they can learn from their teammates especially when everyone is supportive and wants the team to continually improve.
